Tiivistelmä
In response to the imperative role of digital projects proposed by employees in contemporary organizations, this thesis addresses the critical challenges posed by communication barriers in the context of technological transformations. The primary objective is to comprehensively explore and understand the multifaceted nature of these barriers, with particular emphasis on the influence of flat hierarchies in international organizations.
The literature review establishes a foundation by delineating various communication hurdles in digital project implementation, encompassing technical knowledge gaps, cultural disparities, and the impact of communication tools. Notably, the study delves into the complexities of flat hierarchies, delineating both their advantages, such as enhanced innovation and collaboration, and challenges, including role ambiguity and project management intricacies.
Employing a qualitative research design in the methodology, specifically a thematic analysis approach, as the study collects data from employees and managers involved in implementing a change management process aimed at addressing issues in the payment system for a giant in digital services, which later will be tested quantitatively focusing on two flat-hierarchy organizations, Staria and its client.
The analysis identifies a pronounced barrier in the form of a lack of technical skills, exacerbated by a rapid evolution of technology and diverse communication tools. Cultural disparities, language barriers, and differing communication styles also emerge as significant challenges. The study marks the importance of early employee involvement to establish trust, knowledge, and effective communication.
While flat hierarchies foster open communication and innovation, they concurrently introduce uncertainties and role confusion. To mitigate these challenges, the thesis recommends strategies such as cultural training, language support, establishing clear communication channels, and providing leadership support. The promotion of employee involvement throughout project planning and implementation emerges as a key theme to enhance overall outcomes.
