Data was selected based on specific criteria: papers that were written in English, addressed the study issue, were primarily reviews with no geographic restrictions on Finland, and only recent papers that were published after 2010 were selected.
In this literature review, the most relevant, recent studies (n=11) were reviewed concerning the long-term services in Finland and their consequences on older adults’ health improvement. Family visits and providing older adults needs and desires increase the functional and emotional health at the same time. Additionally, older adult participation in own care plan and considering his culture and values improves his emotional wellbeing. Health care providers are arranging different activities for elderly which enhance their functional ability. Regarding the psychological health, found that there was neglection due to workload, functional disability. around one third of older adults were suffering from loneliness, more than half were complaining of depressive symptoms, however, more than thirty percent of older adults had strong mental abilities.
In Finland long-term care services is an important part of the health care system which serve a large proportion of the community; therefore, government should set protocols to decrease workload and burn out of nurses, provide continuous training for nurses, and increase budget needed for these services. Increase community awareness through media.
