Tiivistelmä
This thesis aimed to explore what influence of a video game world's climate and
environment have on character design, particularly how they impact the narrative
and the physical and visual attributes of the characters. This thesis also
examined the importance of weather-related challenges that affect the gameplay
dynamics in a video game.
The study delved into the implementation of various design elements, such as
environmental contrasts, visual art style, and distinct shape language, to shape
the viewers' perceptions of the characters and their roles within the story.
For the research, qualitative methods were used, including interviews, secondary
research, and video game analysis to examine different approaches to creating a
video game and its elements. The goal was to enhance worldbuilding and
narrative by understanding how the video game’s climate and environment can
influence character design and gameplay mechanics. The thesis covers essential
game design principles, design elements, and character design, examining real world anatomy and environments, and further exploring and analyzing character
and mechanic -designs found in existing video games.
The findings showed the vital connection between character design, mechanics,
and the environment to create believable experiences with potential to immerse
players into the game world. The significance of incorporating climate and
environment into character design was highlighted in this research. It will benefit
artists, writers, and game designers involved in video game development by
providing concrete examples of designs that align with the game's overall setting.
