Vasikoiden hoito syntymästä vieroitukseen: työohjeet tutkimusnavettaan

Abstract

Hyvällä vasikoiden hoidolla saadaan kestäviä lypsylehmiä. Tällöin eläimet ovat myös soveltuvia koetoimintaan. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli laatia LUKE Maaningan tutkimusnavettaan työohjeet poikivien eläinten sekä vasikoiden hoitoon. Selkeillä työohjeilla taataan vasikoille hyvä ja yhdenmukainen hoito. Tutkimusnavetassa tarvitaan kestäviä lehmiä koetoimintaa varten. Kestävyyden rakentaminen tulee aloittaa jo alkukasvatusvaiheessa. Maaningan tutkimusnavetassa tutkimuksia varten tarvittavat eläimet kasvatetaan itse, eikä eläimiä hankita karjaan lainkaan ulkopuolelta.

Tutkimusnavetassa työskentelee useita eri työntekijöitä, ja tällöin työmenetelmiä on herkästi erilaisia. Ilman selkeitä työohjeita yhtenäisistä työmenetelmistä on vaikea pitää kiinni, varsinkin henkilöstön vaihtuessa. Oman haasteensa tuo tilalla kausityövoima sekä muu väliaikainen työvoima, kuten esimerkiksi harjoittelijat. Perehdytettäviä henkilöitä voi vuoden aikana olla useita. Ilman selkeitä työohjeita perehdytys voi olla vaihtelevaa ja haasteellista. Tällöin on myös riski, että väärät työmenetelmät saattavat herkästi vakiintua henkilöltä toiselle. Vaihtelevat menetelmät aiheuttavat pahimmillaan eläimille stressiä ja johtavat sairastumisiin.

Opinnäytetyössä laaditut työohjeet pidettiin lyhyinä ja selkeinä. Tällöin niihin on helppo palata uudestaan myös työntekijöiden perehtymisvaiheen jälkeen. Ohjeiden lyhyydellä pyrittiin madaltamaan kynnystä lukea ohjeita. Laaditut ohjeet sisältävät kaikki alkukasvatuksen rutiinityöt. Opinnäytetyö laadittiin toimeksiantajan tarpeeseen. Tutkimusnavetan remontin yhteydessä vanhat poikima- ja vasikkatilat muuttuivat täysin. Tällöin myös työmenetelmiä oli tarpeen tarkistaa sekä päivittää vanhat työohjeet, jotka tilojen muututtua eivät enää olleet sopivia. Uusitut tilat mahdollistivat vasikoiden kasvatuksen yksilö-, ryhmä- tai vierihoitokarsinoissa.

Opinnäytetyössä keskityttiin yksilö- ja ryhmäkarsinakasvatukseen, joka on yleisin kasvatustapa LUKE Maaningan tutkimusnavetassa silloin, kun kokeita ei ole käynnissä. Kokeiden ollessa aktiivisia perustyöohjeet jäävät toissijaisiksi, ja silloin noudatetaan tutkimussuunnitelmassa määriteltyjä ohjeita.

Opinnäytetyössä toteutetut työohjeet luovutettiin toimeksiantajan käyttöön sellaisessa muodossa, että ne ovat tulevaisuudessa helposti päivitettävissä. Työohjeita käytetään tukena uusien työntekijöiden perehdytyksessä sekä työntekijöiden työmenetelmien vakioinnissa. Laadituista työohjeista voidaan laatia myös videoitu työohje mutta sitä ei kuitenkaan otettu osaksi tätä opinnäytetyötä.

The aim of the thesis was to draw up work instructions for the care of calving animals and calves in LUKE Maaninka research barn. Clear work instructions guarantee good and uniform care for calves. The research barn needs sustainable cows for research. Building sustainability should begin at the initial breeding stage. In the Maaninka research barn, the animals needed for research are raised on their own and no animals are acquired from any outside herd.

Several different employees are working at the research barn, which means that there are also different working methods. It is difficult to stick to uniform working methods without clear work instructions, especially when staff changes. Seasonal labour and other temporary labour, such as trainees, pose their own challenges on the farm. There may be several persons to be inducted during the year. Without clear work instructions, orientation can be varied and challenging. In this case, there is also a risk that incorrect working methods may easily become established from one person to another. At worst, varying methods cause stress to animals and lead to illnesses.

The work instructions drawn up in the thesis were kept short and clear. This makes it easy to return to them even after the employee orientation phase. The brevity of the instructions was intended to lower the threshold for reading the instructions. The prepared instructions include all the routine work of initial breeding. The thesis was prepared for the client's needs. In connection with the renovation of the research barn, the old calving and calf areas were completely transformed. It was also necessary to review working methods and update the old work instructions, which were no longer suitable due to changes in areas. The refurbished facilities allowed calves to grow in individual, group, or point-of-care pens.

This thesis focused on individual and group pen breeding, which is the most common breeding method in LUKE Maaninka research barn when no research is going on. When the research is active, the basic work instructions remain secondary, and the instructions specified in the research plan are followed.

The work instructions implemented in the thesis were handed over to the client in such a form that they can be easily updated in the future. The work instructions are used to support the orientation of new employees and the standardisation of employees' working methods. A videotaped work instruction can also be prepared from the prepared work instructions, but it was not included in this thesis.
