Tiivistelmä
The continuously increasing incidence of memory disorders and the worry caused by them pose a significant challenge to the social and health industry in Finland. The possibilities of the public sector to rise to this challenge are limited, and as healthcare expenditure keeps rising, other operators and new preventive measures are also dearly needed to aid in this venture that touches us all.

This publication on the Art and Culture – Keys for Better Brain Health research and development work describes four service models that promote brain health. In addition to this, the content of the service models is described from a theoretical perspective, building a bridge between art, culture and brain health. In the spirit of sociocultural inspiration, participatory art activities enable the promotion of brain health by utilising the individual’s existing resources. This publication brings new knowledge for the instruction of participatory art activities aimed at the elderly and for brain health promotion for professionals and students in the field as well as the elderly themselves.

The aim of the Turku region section of the TEHU subproject of the PUMPPU project (Citizen Centric Welfare Services with Multiple Service Providers) was to create new kinds of service models that promote brain and memory health for the third sector in order to complement the services provided by the public sector. The Pumppu project is a cross regional ERDF-financed theme project, funded by the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme, the EU unit of the regions of Southern Finland. The project was implemented in the ERDF areas of Southern Finland between 2011 and 2014.
