Tiivistelmä
The objective of the three-year EU Interreg IIIA project “Reed Strategy in Finland and Estonia” overseen by the Southwest Finland Regional Environmental
Centre was to examine the impact of the common reed on water, water quality and water protection. A subproject on water protection was also carried out to study the effects of the common reed on nutrient absorption in catchment waters from terrestrial areas, and the effects of route mowing and other types of reed removal methods on water and other environmental quality issues.
Three student theses were written on the effects of the common reed on water protection and quality as part of the fisheries & environment and sustainable development degree programs, and the impact of the reed on greenhouse gas emissions was also looked into in a study carried out at the University of Tartu in Estonia. Furthermore, all available information concerning the common reed and water quality were brought together to form a literature survey, which is compiled in this publication. Both Finnish and foreign literature were utilized as sources for this literature survey.
The publication discusses the significance of the common reed in coastal areas and the waters of Finland and Estonia, its impacts on the environment, and the effects of different reed management methods on water quality. One of the central objectives of the publication is to provide recommendations on how to manage reed beds at different times of the year, specifically from the perspective of water protection and water quality.
