Information Systems Used in Ships

Abstract

The information systems used in ships nowadays have had the biggest influence on the marine industry and maritime safety. It is a topic not many people are familiar with, since these systems are often unique for the shipping industry only and are not used in many other fields. However, they are still quite important because sea travels for entertainment, travel or transfer purposes can get quite dangerous if it is not well-regulated. Most dangers come from the fact that seas are isolated from the land and immediate help in case of emergency could not be easily provided. That is why most of the information systems used on vessels are mainly for navigation purposes and provide means of communication with land stations or other ships.
