Tiivistelmä
Welding is a manufacturing process that necessitates the use of fixtures for proper positioning and workholding of parts. Welding also introduces heat and causes stresses and deformations in the part, which need to be account-ed for when planning the fixturing. Correct use of fixtures has a heavy influence on the accuracy and quality of the resulting welded parts. The goal of this thesis project was to improve the modular fixture system used by the commissioning company. This included organizing the information about the existing parts, designing new fix-tures, and creating instructions and manuals related to their use.
The methods used for carrying out the work included interviewing the employees of RD Group to understand how the initial fixture system was being used and what the potential areas in need of improvement were; going through the relevant documentation to find the necessary information to be compiled in an excel database, using SolidWorks for modelling new fixtures and preparing manufacturing drawings. Also, strength calculations for evaluating new designs were performed.
As a result of this thesis work, the existing fixtures were organized into an excel table for easy lookup of available parts and their quantities and several fixture assembly instructions for particular products were created some of which include additional general guidelines for fixture usage. Also, a number of new fixtures were designed and prepared for production based on the needs identified by the client.
