Tiivistelmä
Adding a multiplayer mode to a video game is a powerful way to introduce new elements to it. Cooperation (Co op) can encourage players to achieve common goals and develop social skills, while competition can encourage players to challenge each other and enhance their learning. The purpose of this thesis was to design and further develop a cooperative and competitive multiplayer version of the PaimioVR simulation game created for educational purposes and to determine which game format is a more attractive solution for players and whether it has connections with learned understanding. For the research, testing was carried out, where players completed both versions of the game format in pairs. After both performances, the players answered a survey, which tested the understanding of what was learned, and inquired about the players preferences. The results revealed that the players found the competitive game more appealing, but they achieved their learning objectives better in the form of a cooperative game. Finally, a recommendation is given regarding further research, which could focus more closely on players learning in a competitive game format.
