This paper aimed to determine the internationalization support services of governmental organizations in the Pohjois-Savo region, Finland. In addition, a further objective was to create an internationalization support services map to describe and classify the services. The goal was also to analyze the services by describing their weak and strong sides and to spot development opportunities for more effective internationalization in the region.
In this context, internationalization theories and support services of internationalization were summarized in the initial phases of the study to achieve accurate insights. In the research phase of the study, internationalization support services of the governmental organizations in the region were determined. Over 20 interviews were held with high-level managers of the 9 different governmental organizations in the Pohjois-Savo region. Additionally, a survey was conducted in the study to analyze the internationalization dynamics of the region. The survey also enabled to creation of a better understanding of the current impacts of the internationalization support services in the region.
Consequently, internationalization support services have been classified into 5 different stages based on their functions. The governmental organizations of the region are placed in the internationalization service map according to functions of providing internationalization support services. Moreover, actions need to be taken and recommendations have been discussed for a more effective internationalization process in the Pohjois-Savo region.
