Tiivistelmä
The topic of this thesis is an internal communications development plan for Company X. The commissioner of this thesis is an internationally operating SME company originally founded in Oulu. The company operates in the field of optical instruments; hence most of the company revenue consists of foreign trade. As the commissioner wishes to maintain anonymous, the thesis title states the commissioning company as Company X. On the commissioner’s recommendation, the company is addressed as ‘the company’ in the text and therefore the term Company X is solely used on the title.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the current situation of internal communication in the company and provide recommendations based on the gained data and relevant professional literature. The objective of the thesis is to answer the following research questions: First, “What factors is successful internal communication built on?”; second, “What are the key functions of successful internal communication?” and finally, “How can internal communication build community spirit and what factors have an impact on this?”.
The theoretical background consists of theories and literature regarding corporate communication and internal communication as well as literary sources discussing some specified factors impacting internal communication in an organisation. The research was conducted in a form of an online Webropol survey. The aim of the survey was to recognize the initial state of internal communication in the company. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used in analysing the data.
Based on the research results of the thesis, it can be argued that several issues seem to influence the practices of internal communication in a company. These issues comprised topics such as meeting practices, consistency of practices and the importance of motivation and job satisfaction. Other important findings of the thesis were related to the correlation between effective internal communication and motivation, work engagement, and the company culture.
