How efficiently a firm operates is due to how effectively the firm’s business processes are designed and operated. A failing business process can lead to bankruptcy. So, it is important that competitive firms practice business process improvement.
This thesis was written based on the topic business process improvement and in conjunction with a growing roofing company in Phoenix, Arizona. The theory section mainly consist the different popular methodologies of business process improvement. Business process improvement have been a practice that dominated the manufacturing industry and now it is getting applied to the service industry. Business process improvement is the act of improving a business process through collecting data on failing process and interpreting the data to develop process improvements. There are a multitude of tools to implement business process improvement.
The aim of the thesis was to establish a critical business process within the case company “Mikku and Sons Roofing” that needed improvement. Once the process was identified it was assessed and the root of the problem was established. The critical process identified was customer communication. This was established by using process improvement tools available in the theoretical part of the thesis and through the collection of data on the case company. The method of collecting the data was primarily through an online customer reviews and an interview with the production manager of the case company. By following a mixture of theoretical steps and chosen process improvement tools the author was able to combine both data and theory to establish valuable suggestions on how and why the case company could/should improve the critical business process.
The suggestions marked just the beginning of a business process improvement project and led to another question: should the case company adopt more standardization of the processes before conducting business process improvement?
