Tiivistelmä
The survival genre has gained significant popularity over the past decade, particularly following the release of the sandbox survival game Minecraft in 2009. This influential game inspired a wave of similar titles, establishing enduring staples within the genre of the survival games.
This thesis explores the design principals and mechanics that contribute to creating engaging survival game experiences beyond the boundaries of the genre. By examining the core elements that define survival gameplay, such as compelling challenges, player progression and resource management, the thesis identifies key strategies to enhance player engagement through the theory of Flow. Through a comprehensive analysis of notable games using such mechanics, the thesis demonstrates the versatility of survival elements, and how game designers across the industry utilize them to craft immersive experiences.
The results of the thesis work were then used to build a blueprint to design survival mechanics for all types of games beyond the survival genre, as well as to improve the design of an independent game currently in development.
