The transformation journey of a global manufacturing company —from traditional in-house to agile cloud computing
Year 2024 Number of pages 48
The IT industry has shifted towards cloud services for the last ten years. To stay up to date with technological advancements companies globally have had to put forth tremendous effort to transform and adapt their applications, ways of working and organization mindset towards cloud solutions. In this thesis we follow the journey of Head of cloud and infrastructure services at a global manufacturing business that seeks to transform the IT infrastructure towards cloud. The transformation process will be presented in the form of a learning diary. The beneficiaries of the diary will be future technology leaders in the company who will embark on similar disruptive technology transformations.
Moving over to a cloud environment is a fundamentally different way of operating IT systems. The theoretical background of the diary considers the six R’s of migration which is a cloud migration strategy in IT, that is typically applied before migrating into a Cloud platform. The diary also touches on areas such as change management, cross-cultural behavior and behavioral theories as the transformation is not solely a technical one. Metso is a global company, and the change involves a totally different mindset and thinking from the people involved.
The diary entries will be covering a period of 10 weeks in the autumn of 2024. The entries are based on weekly meetings, architectural meetups, IT info sharing and planning sessions. During this period, the diary will not be able to fully cover the transformation from beginning until completion as the process takes many years. With the help of this thesis, the writer seeks to personally benefit through reflection and study to get a clearer concept of all factors involved.
