Tiivistelmä
Since Finland introduced plastic waste bins in 2019 to households, the existing plastic recycling companies were not prepared for the public’s great response; they were overwhelmed and could not process the quantity of waste delivered to their site. Finnish plastic recycling companies decided to ship the excess plastic waste to other countries for processing; this is an investment that Finland is losing out on. There is an opportunity going to waste here. Although this thesis deals with a small-scale operation, there are employment opportunities when the company is successful. The cost of transporting this waste alone to other countries in itself is worth proceeding with this endeavour.

To complete the objective of this thesis the author had to examine the feasibility of starting a small-scale plastic recycling company in Finland, by contacting plastic packaging companies, and plastic recycling companies and supplying them with a questionnaire relating to their business, to ascertain the pros and cons of this business. The author also contacted local authorities and financial institutes to ascertain if a small-scale plastic recycling company could be started in Kirkkonummi, Finland. For the empirical part of the study, the author had assistance from Suomen Uusyritysheskuset. Ry, to complete all the monetary aspects of the thesis. The results of these findings explained that a small plastic recycling company could be started and become profitable after one year and not five years, as first thought.

This thesis could help others if they were inclined to start a similar venture in the future, but it would be advisable to have a Finnish partner in the company to deal with negotiations and interviews as this would lead to a better understanding of Finnish business etiquette and a larger sample size of interviewees willing to participate.
