Tiivistelmä
This research paper investigates how cultural factors affect business negotiations with Japanese businesses from a foreign company’s perspective. Topics such as hierarchical structures, communication styles, importance of relation-ship-building, and decision-making were focused on. Due to increasing globalization of trade, it is essential to understand these cultural intricacies when one is trying to establish successful business relationships with Japanese companies.
This study answers the question: How do cultural factors affect business negotiations with Japanese companies? Qualitative research methods such as interviews, academic literature review, secondary data, and case studies were used. These methods were used to analyze effects of hierarchy, indirect communication, and long-term relationship-building on negotiations.
Research findings show that hierarchical structures have a significant effect on decision-making authority. Along with this, Japanese use of indirect communication affect how offers and counteroffers are presented. Further, informal consensus-building (nemawashi) plays a critical role in building trust and understanding before formal meetings take place. These factors lead to a negotiation style that prioritizes long-term commitment over short-term gains.
This research contributes to the field of international business by offering practical examples for foreign companies engaging in negotiations with Japanese companies. Understanding and adapting to these cultural factors is in key role when trying to succeed in and enhance business relationships and improve negotiation outcomes. Future research could expand upon these and examine how globalization and generational differences influence traditional Japanese business practices.
