Background: Keratorefrective surgeries have been performed in Finland for a few decades. The most common surgery types are Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), Laser in-situ Kera-tomileusis (LASIK) and Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE). In Finland, an amendment to the decree is underway to allow optometrists to prescribe glasses to a person who has un-dergone eye surgery. At present, it is prohibited under the 1994 regulation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out what kind of complications have been associ-ated with the selected surgeries before 1994 and what kind of complications are being identified now. This information is valid on the basis that an optometrist today can be aware of what kind of eye health and vision situations will be encountered when prescribing glasses to a person who has undergone eye surgery.
Methods: The method used in this thesis is an integrative literature review. An integrative litera-ture review creates a comprehensive picture of the selected topic by utilising various source materials.
Results: The result of the thesis was that the same most common complications were identified in both examined periods. Complications are dependent on the invasiveness of the surgery and have not changed significantly over the years.
Conclusions: The most common complications were highlighted from the data. However, their prevalence could not be compared due to the limited nature of the data. Nevertheless, infor-mation emerged that the newer the data, the more accurate information about complications can be obtained.
