Malnutrition is an imbalance between nutrients a person`s body needs to function properly and the nutrients he/she consumes. It is a major public health issue that affects children under the age of five leading to high levels of morbidity and mortality mostly in developing countries. Nurses being the first primary care contact for the patients in most cases, their interventions play vital role in prevention, early detection and treatment of malnutrition in children under the age of five.
The purpose of this study is to explore previous literature and research about nursing interventions in the malnutrition of children under the age of five with the aim of reviewing these literatures thereby answering research question “What kinds of interventions do nurses implement in malnutrition for children under the age of five?” A descriptive literature review method was used as the research method for this thesis. Data was obtained from reliable sources namely PubMed Central, Wiley Online library and Google Scholar. The inclusion and exclusion criteria aided in the selection of twelve articles used in this literature review.
A thematic method was used to analyze the findings from the research articles by putting them into three main themes namely assessment and early recognition, promotion of health and prevention of disease and therapeutic feeding and supplementary foods. After analyzing the selected articles, authors concluded that nursing interventions in malnutrition of children under the age of five are vital. However, the findings highlight the need for continuous training and resource allocation to enable nurses to deliver effective and balanced care, thereby promoting optimal growth and development in vulnerable children.
