Effects of telemedicine and e-health in older people with memory disorder and caregivers in home care: a literature review

Abstract

This research investigates the practical value of digital health solutions which help people with memory disorders alongside their caregivers. The relevance of e-health tools continues to in-crease for home-based care because the aging population keeps growing along with the rising number of diagnosed dementia patients up to October 2023. The research applied Inductive Content Analysis to 15 peer-reviewed articles between 2014 and 2024 to examine three specific areas: digital tools' influence on patients' quality of life and telehealth implementation in home environments and caregiver satisfaction evaluation. The study reveals benefits of e-health for patient’s wellbeing and the respite it gives caregiver while highlighting the associated challenges. The main difficulties persist because of digital illit-eracy technical problems ethical concerns and limited access in remote and resource-constrained settings. The caregivers found value in support and training features yet they expe-rienced system complexity-related stress and data privacy concerns. The success of these technologies depends on having good usability together with inclusivity and interoperability with care systems. The need to develop user-friendly systems and establish ethical standards and ensure equitable access becomes more urgent to enable technology to support dementia care instead of working against it.
