Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyö käsittelee animaatioelokuvan visuaalista suunnittelua oppimispäiväkirjan muodossa. Visuaalinen suunnittelu on tärkeä osa esituotantoa, sillä sen perusteella elokuvan lopullinen ilme muovautuu. Opinnäytetyön näkökulmana on erityisesti tarinankerrontaan liittyvien motiivien ja taustatutkimuksen vaikutus tyylivalintoihin.
Kirjallisessa osuudessa havainnollistetaan visuaalisen suunnittelun tärkeyttä tarinankerronnalle esimerkkielokuvan analysoinnin kautta. Tämän jälkeen siirrytään taiteellisen opinnäytetyön Myrkynvihreä-lyhytelokuvan lähtökohtiin sekä teemoihin. Valitun miljöön merkitystä avataan aikakauden tutkimukseen perehtyen.
Taiteellisessa osiossa havainnollistetaan työskentelyä visuaalisen suunnittelun parissa, johon kuuluivat hahmosuunnittelu, lokaatiot ja propit sekä konseptikuvitus. Rinnalla kulkee taustatutkimuksen viitoittama tyylivalintojen motivointi. Pohdinnassa punnitaan suorituksen onnistumista ja oman osaamisen riittävyyttä alan kriteereihin nähden. The thesis studies visual development of an animated feature in the form of a journal of learning. Visual development is an integral part of pre-production that designates the look of an animated film. The thesis specifically focuses on how the story and research affect stylistic choices.
The importance of visual development is demonstrated through analyzing a chosen feature length film. After this the themes and motives behind the thesis project Green is the color of death are discussed. The importance of the Victorian era as a setting is justified.
Last part of the thesis highlights artistic work in the form of visual development for the short film Green is the color of death. Character design, location and props, and concept art are presented in their own sections that also delve into the reasons and motives behind the designs. The execution of the project is assessed and if the current competence measures up to the needs of the animation industry.
