Tiivistelmä
The thesis explores the role of Artificial Intelligence in improving project management practices within the Finnish regional development context focusing on projects undertaken by Cursor Oy. Though Finland is among the frontrunners of the digital revolution, one would expect that AI would be applied in project environments, particularly in the regional context, but this is not the case. The aim of the study was to investigate the manner in which AI is currently used in project management and to determine and describe the benefits and challenges of adopting AI in the management of projects and its future outlook.

Qualitative research design employed semi-structured interviews from six professionals such as project managers, innovation officers, and strategy leaders. The results indicate that AI adoption has been early and very fragmented mainly confining its use for supportive activities such as dashboards, scheduling, and automated reporting. Respondents agreed with the benefits including boosting their efficiency, visibility, prediction capabilities and reducing the errors in tasks. However, there were also significant barriers, the most important of which were data quality, skills gaps, trust in AI outputs, and cultural resistance to change.

Presently AI is positioned as a decision-support tool and not as a decision-maker, with human oversight still being fundamental. Respondents were optimistic regarding the future role of AI but emphasized the need to establish a strong framework in governance and an ethical set of principles as well as capacity-building initiatives. This research contributes to knowledge through localized empirical insights and practical recommendations for sustainable AI integration into the regional project management practices
