Tiivistelmä
The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to help support the development of the safety culture at X Company by upgrading the employees’ safety competence. More specifically, this thesis aspire to benefit the client Company X by improving its OSH processes by means of a competence-based model for development. The development task focused on pointing out the gaps in competence and creating a systemic approach that can be utilized by the supervisors on a day-to-day basis.
The theoretical framework uses principles from the field of Lean Safety, literature on safety culture, and the ISO 9001:2015 process approach. These approaches explain the concept of competence and its application within safe and quality performances.
From a methodical approach, the study used document analysis and surveys on employees. Accident reports, OSH documents, and company guidelines were assessed for development needs. The surveys on employees were used for insight on current safety competence and employees’ perception on safety practices on a day-to-day basis.
Findings included gaps within safe work practice processes, personal protective equipment application, and safety training consistency. From these findings, a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model for competence development was developed with the goal of defining and enforcing supervisory roles and consistent safety training. Overall, the general implication here is that competence enhancement is important for better safety performance and mitigating Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) hazards and production process reliability.
