Stress and adaptation among international nursing students in Finnish nursing education: an autoethnographic approach

Abstract

This study explores the stress and adaptation process among international nursing students within Finnish nursing education using a collaborative autoethnographic approach. Drawing from reflective journals, group discussions, and observations, this research links personal experiences with broader concepts of acculturation, stress, and coping. The analysis is conducted through reflexive thematic analysis, Revealed four interconnected themes: language and cultural barriers, clinical practice challenges, peer support, and resilience and confidence. While stressed, these experiences ultimately encouraged the authors to push their boundaries which fostered personal and professional growth. These findings suggest that the English Nursing programs can enhance international students' adaptation and well-being by intensified language instruction and supportive clinical supervision. Understanding these experiences can help mitigate risks related to stress and maladaptation and promote Equitable progression into the Nursing workforce.
