Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to describe the role nurses play in patient centred care. The aim was to synthesize evidence from the existing literature to enhance both knowledge and understanding of how nurses promote and maintain patient centred care in healthcare.

Patient centred care (PCC) has been developing over the last three decades and its relevance in healthcare has significantly grown. It has been gaining prominence globally over the years due to its ability to enhance quality of care. As interests in PCC is growing globally, new concepts and models have emerged. The global healthcare sector has been experiencing tremendous changes over the years due to rapid development in healthcare technologies, improving professional knowledge and skills, changing patient demographics, and growing number of chronic illnesses. These developments have resulted in the emergence of new roles that have promoted inconsistencies in the role of development and how nurses prepare thus necessitating re-evaluation of the existing professional roles.

A descriptive literature review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines. Data search was conducted using two electronic databases that is CIHNALL Ebsco and ProQuest central. After screening, twelve articles met the inclusion criteria for the final study. Data analysis was completed using inductive content analysis.

In answering the research question what is the role of a nurse in patient cantered care? four distinct yet related generic categories describing the roles nurses play in delivering patient centered care emerged. These include establish therapeutic relationships, advocate for patients, promote patient empowerment, and provide safe quality care.

In conclusion, the findings of this thesis have demonstrated nurses' fundamental roles in patient centred care. Nurses are integral in establishing therapeutic relationships, an important element in building trust and mutual respect. While advocating for the patients’ needs, nurses act as a bridge between patients and the healthcare system through care coordination and multiprofessional collaboration. Above all, nurses provide safe quality care through holistic patient assessment enabling them to detect and mitigate risks.
