Tiivistelmä
This thesis delves into the challenges associated with System-on-Chip (SoC) Innovative Research and Development (R&D) projects, drawing a comparative analysis between R&D projects and conventional endeavours. The study employs a comprehensive research approach, using qualitative analyses, along with interviews involving key stakeholders from both management and technical tracks in the field. The investigation begins by identifying and categorizing the unique challenges encountered in SoC R&D projects compared to standard initiatives. To unravel the complexities, qualitative insights is employed, shedding light on the best practices to handle such projects in the product roadmap. Interviews were conducted with diverse individuals occupying pivotal roles in both management and technical spheres. Through these conversations, a nuanced understanding of the factors contributing to possible uncertainties in R&D projects. Utilizing tools such as the fishbone diagram and the 5 Whys method, a thorough root cause analysis was conducted. This revealed underlying issues affecting project timelines, resource allocation, and communication structures. The results of the analysis underscore the need for strategic interventions to follow different project management practices. One key recommendation emanating from the study proposes the establishment of a distinct technology development track for new and innovative solutions. This separation from the normal product development roadmap aims to mitigate uncertainties until proof of concept and clarity of requirements are achieved. In conclusion, this thesis contributes valuable insights into the intricacies of SoC R&D projects and challenges and provides a robust foundation for understanding the challenges unique to innovative projects.
